Facial spa treatments are a relaxing and rejuvenating way to improve the feel and appearance of your skin, at least for a short while after you leave your session. However, most spa facials do not have lasting benefits because they treat only the superficial cells of your skin, without affecting the underlying structures that are responsible for new cell generation.
A CryoFacial is unique in that it encompasses some of the same treatments as a traditional facial, but with the added benefit of cryotherapy.
The Mechanisms Behind Cryotherapy
Cold therapy has been used for centuries to treat wounds, bruises, sore muscles and achy joints. Its effectiveness lies in its ability to shrink capillaries and small blood vessels to reduce inflammation, and in its numbing effect on nerve endings, to reduce pain. Traditional cold therapy involves either immersion in icy cold water, or the application of ice packs to an injured site.
Cryotherapy harnesses technology to put liquid nitrogen vapor to work in treating inflamed or injured soft tissues. The effect is similar to cold therapy, but the treatment is more intensive. Liquid nitrogen is able to drop environmental temperatures to as low as minus 270º Fahrenheit, providing an intense freezing effect for the superficial layers of the skin.
In response to extreme cold, affected blood vessels constrict, shunting blood, fluids and toxins away from the surface and into the viscera. There, excess fluids and toxins are eliminated from your body, while blood is maximally oxygenated and replenished with nutrients. At the end of your session, as your superficial tissues begin to warm, your blood vessels dilate to welcome replenished blood to your skin cells.
How CryoFacial Works
Your CryoFacial session will begin like a traditional facial as the clinician preps your skin for cold therapy. Then, a wand-like device is used to direct a thin controlled stream of liquid nitrogen vapor over your facial skin.
The freezing temperature causes your pores to shrink and your skin to tighten. Puffiness goes away as fluids and toxins are removed from your skin, and a rosy glow appears as freshly replenished blood returns to the surface. As an added bonus, cryotherapy stimulates the production of collagen, the stuff that keeps your skin smooth and elastic.
Cryotherapy is then followed up with massage, exfoliation and moisturizing, as with a traditional facial.
The benefits of CryoFacial include:
- Decreased fine lines and wrinkles
- Increased collagen production
- Improved circulation
- Refined pores
- Soothing of eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis
- Reduced acne
CryoFacial costs about the same as any traditional spa facial, making it a great value since it does so much more. Once you have your first CryoFacial, you will not be satisfied with old-school facials that don’t provide long-term benefits.
